Force side in Perth with the minimal of fuss. The 69-17 mauling didn’t please all however, and it was quite apparent that the Lions coaching side, Warren Gatland especially, were not best pleased with quality of opposition put before them on Wednesday. The Lions want to be tested early and get themselves facing strong opposition in the lead up to the test matches, however the Force felt a dead-rubber Super 15 match this weekend was more important than the chance to test themselves against a prestigious side such as the Lions. The good news for Gatland is that Reds director of rugby Ewan McKenzie would dearly love nothing more than claiming a Lions scalp, as it would further enhance his ambitions to become an international coach himself. McKenzie has made it quite clear he’d like to be in charge of his home countrymen and succeed Robbie Deans at some point, and a strong Reds showing here wouldn’t be a bad thing to aid his future plans.
